Reflections
By AJ Naseem
With the recent violence sweeping across the country, it
only shows the greater importance of the Mandela in our lives. When we look out
at the recent violence in Kenosha and elsewhere and some of the senseless
crimes and violence taking place in the name of justice, the Mandela seems to
have an even greater relevance in our lives. Only if its message could reach
more people could many more be saved. The Mandela gives us the perfect path to
resistance and self-preservation.
When we see people reacting in violent ways, it is only the
Mandela that can give us solace and reprieve. The message is clear: expect the
best; think before reacting; respect for self; caring for others; look for a
non-violent path and transforming power. These simple everyday affirmations can
truly change the direction of our lives and give better hope. We really need to
uphold such a sacred rite.
The recent violence has been atrocious and it is even more
important to reflect on the Mandela and look toward it for guidance. We need to
gather around the table of peace with the Mandela at the center to make any
progress. If only more could be done to share the message of the non-violent
path with the young people across the country and others who are caught up in
the violence to take a step back and realize that there is a better way. Alas,
so much suffering and hardship could be thwarted by such a simple premise.
We really need to stress the importance of the Mandela now
more than ever and try to bring its message to the masses. If we are focused on
a non-violent path every day of our lives, a lot of these crises could be
averted. I strongly believe that by practicing non-violence we can get closer
to peace and harmony than relying on physical force. We need to lay down arms
in the words of a famous author and say farewell to realize a true and practical
state. It was hope of all our greatest leaders and I think it comes to light
whenever darkness takes over that the Mandela shines brighter than ever to show
us greater meaning and hope.
I hope no one of our AVP community loses hope during this
time but takes solace and repose in the power of the Mandela to teach and to
guide. It is also needed in the wake of such travesties to give peace to the victims
and reconciliation to those affected. We need to reaffirm such a belief every
day to make it real and not just lip service. I am thankful for the opportunity
that AVP gave me that now lets me know that there is always hope when things
seem too narrow or hopeless. I hope some of the victims of the recent violence
can come into such a fold.
