A Universal Food Program for all Americans

A Universal Food Program for all Americans

With the elections close, New Yorkers should really consider one major topic that affects us all- welfare. Namely, the food assistance program. We desperately need a universal food program throughout the United States to help people purchase food. Like Food stamps, a universal food program would allot money for each household to spend on food. This is vital to the future and well-being of our country.

Right now, no candidates have spoken out on this topic. We need to do a better job. With inflation and higher food prices, all families deserve a fair price on food. For single families who don’t buy in bulk, it’s even more oppressive. We need to invoke a system that can help each person buy food that would sustain them. This is hugely important. We cannot let a food shortage bring this country down.

A universal food program would be very similar to our EBT program in that it would withhold a portion of a person’s income to pay for food or conversely, subsidize food for all. People have to spend too much on other things to be constantly worried about food and further with price gouging and inflation, they are easily susceptible to overspending. We need to change the way Americans buy and acquire food for their families. And standing on the bread line is no answer.

This is a major crisis in America and affects us all and there are no candidates on either side that have addressed the issue. In fact, they have remained silent to line the pockets of rich shareholders and supplant farmers for votes as part of a corporatizing of America. We need to change our whole view of food shopping. A universal food program would change all that and can easily be paid for with taxes or a federal subsidy that collaborate with major food producers and companies.

When a mother is unable to buy necessary food items for her family it is truly abominable. Further, it could lead to malnutrition and other health problems. When a working parent cannot afford food for their children and either alimony or child support cannot adequately pay for the food of our children, then we are falling short. A universal food program would be a uniform program that would pay for food for all Americans and thereby be more fiscally responsible and socially progressive.

I ask all Americans to vie for a universal food program that will help all families. Please don’t let our citizens starve and be deprived of such an indispensable privilege- food. Everyone deserves proper access to food and no one should be deprived.  When families are going hungry, and people cannot pay for food or their children don’t have good nutrition, there is a big hole in our thinking and logic. We need to provide for the children and families of this country and not neglect such a dire issue. When will the politicians listen?

Don’t leave Americans hungry.
