Violence then and Now

Violence then and Now

When I was growing up as a youth in New York City in the 1980’s, I felt estranged by my surroundings that seemed foreign and inscrutable. I would always find myself trying to fit in at school and outside, whenever I’d go out to play in the park. Alas, I was a foreign-born citizen from another country and trying to relate to a foreign land, after experiencing a family tragedy, was almost impossible. But like any youth, I tried to break the barrier but would always come face to face with violence. The violence was occurring outside of my home at a park that everyone used, where kids from all over, young and old, would come to convene. However, scenes of violence and bullying would often break out in these hostile environs that today, are recalled in the same violence that I see on our streets and roads.

In those days, when I was younger, I saw countless acts of violence that were truly shocking to me. I did not know what to make of it. If a lot of it was not directed toward the new kid on the block of Pakistani origin, it was other random acts of violence with kids fighting over anything like bragging rights for the smallest things, bullying or harassment on the playground by the bigger kid, gangs that would take out some kind of revenge, or racial tensions with kids teasing other kids or other kinds of playground brawls. Needless to say, it left a kid from a foreign land quite frightened and broken up due to witnessing such acts.

Now all these years later I see the same playing out on the streets of our great nation with clashes of protesters and police, citizens killing one another, policeman using excessive force, or simply damage of public property and vandalism. Such acts are distressing and to know that this is the same kind of violence that existed in my youth, is truly uncanny and makes me think that there is so much regress in our society. When as a person, I have been able to experience the true power of non-violence and peaceful protest to overcome the iniquities of my youth, it is hard to see that others do not have the same view. When in my youth, I reached out to others of different backgrounds in my community to make friends and was able to overcome some of the barriers of cultural separation, we see the same disintegration occurring in our communities today that hearkens back to the civil rights movement. How could the same pathos exist that bears such parallels to the microcosm of my life in those days to the macrocosm of our society today.

The reason is the lack of discipline and belief in the power of non-violence. When in my youth, my firm stance on non-violence often changed hearts and made friends out of enemies or outsiders, and even once, led one of the gangs in my neighborhood to come up to me and offer their thanks and gratitude, I knew that I could change my fellow man or neighbor by acts of love and kindness but in this current context, with so much uproar and furor, that leads to violence breaking out, we realize that there are forces that are trying to break apart the universal bond of humanity.

When I was able to withstand the violence in my youth, seeing my own family berated for their Pakistani origin, or my own siblings being harassed and stalked, accepting the insults of the white kids in our neighborhood who saw us as a lower caste, and random other acts of violence with kids beating up other kids in senseless brawls and macho fights to boost their ego, how can I forebear those same acts as they show up in my adult life in a whole new context but with the same violent undertones. It is through non-violent communication and an adherence to the principles of MLK and Mahatma Gandhi that can lead to greater hope and salvation.

If only the young people of today could know the scars of yesterday that are bore by people living among us that we can all heal and find real unity and forgiveness. Let’s hope through AVP we can bring that change in the lives of others.

Looking Ahead

Looking Ahead

As we reach the election, we should all hope that the next President is someone who espouses non-violence in our communities. With so much violence that has overtaken our communities, it is the one election where non-violence should be a key issue. We need our next President to address this problem and speak out against violence in a direct way. We also need the next president to be a symbol for peace and make non-violence a central theme.

As we hear stories of violence taking place en masse in our communities, it is time for the adherents of non-violence to speak out and stand up for a leader who will share our concerns. We need a President who understands the importance of peaceful protest and non-violent resistance and the ideas of our greatest leaders like JFK, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. We need to show a desire to be non-violent and to carry out the principles of the Mandela in our everyday lives.

Those of us that embrace the non-violent path must show our support for leaders who will also adhere to those principles. It should be our top agenda. When young people lose their lives due to so many senseless acts of violence, we should stand up for a leader who will show a better way. As our young people succumb to violence in their lives, we must set forth an agenda that shows people the meaning of non-violence and create more awareness and acceptance.

The teaching of Mahatma Gandhi and the life that he espoused show us that non-violence is the only path that saves so much heartache and sorrow. For those of us who are affected by violence, it is the panacea for all ills. Our leaders must embody such qualities for us to advance as humankind. The AVP community is blessed to have such a model and to invoke in our political lives. How can we be truly be great leaders without a real understanding of this noblesse oblige.

As a New Yorker, I am dismayed by so many acts of violence that take place in our big cities and leave so many scarred and broken. We must reverse the tide. We must attain a grasp of the non-violent path so we can have greater hope. We must seek out better resolutions than the old rock and dagger. Let us hope that the AVP community will grow and prosper with the new election and continue its work as a cupbearer of non-violence and that the next election, will see its growth and name spread throughout the land and throughout the lives of people to bring the light of its wisdom to those dark places. I hope with the next election, as a new wave of hope takes hold, that also a new foundation for non-violence will also be laid as its cornerstone. Let’s march on hand in hand.

The New York Post

The New York Post should stop writing stories about Osama bin Laden's niece when it has maligned her uncle as a terrorist in print for years.

Eradicating Scavenger Species in Africa

More than anything, and one of the greatest issues concerning us all, is the eradication of scavenger species in Africa. The perpetuation of such species is detrimental to us all due to the harm that it causes our ecosystem. Scavenger species are the worst in all of Africa and their persistence is currently bringing down the natural world. We need to intervene and eradicate the primary scavengers in Africa that are causing so much torment and bring more peace and restoration to Africa. Contrary to conservationists who advocate the survival of such species due to their endangered status, we need to completely eradicate such species- as hyenas, foxes, wolves jackals and wild African dogs- to bring restoration back to Africa.

These malevolent species cause massive destruction on a wide scale in Africa. They cause an aberration in the natural selection process that Darwin taught and are literally ripping Africa apart. Hyenas often do the most damage and their manner of killing is obscene and downright brutal. They often eat their victims alive and such a manner of killing should be opposed.  The same manner is exhibited by African dogs and both species are a menace in Africa. We need eliminate such species as hyenas and African dogs since they are an aberrant species and commence an eradication plan to remove these species from Africa and the entire world.

The spread of such species endangers the survival of other species and impedes natural selection or evolution. The interference of such species in the propagation of other species is the number one reason why these species pose such a threat. Now as we have the benefit of video that reveals so much brutality of the behavior of such species, we can resolve to intervene and eliminate such a destructive species and bring it down. Hyenas and wild dogs kill mercilessly and the sight of such attacks and the reality of such gross acts can move us to eradicate these species. Such a species must be destroyed just like a virus, plague or disease that ravages an entire forest. We must not let false animal conservationists to determine the fate of these species but most take it upon ourselves to systematically kill off such a predatory species.

Hyenas that have such a basic evolution of the animal species that have only evolved to kill pose the greatest threat and are inconsistent with the large-scale evolutionary model of our ecosystem. They, like dogs, are a transient species that are only intent on killing for survival. There is no purpose but the need to feed and gorge, and is intermittent or at best, transient. Therefore, human intervention is necessary to bring the balance back and even more necessarily, eradicate such a harmful species by hunting or even poaching such animals for their skins or fur.

There is no such menacing, scary and heathen animal like the hyena who hunts and kills mercilessly often ripping its victims apart. It must be destroyed to let other species flourish. True science recognizes the harmful effects a species can have if it interacts in the wild or a natural habitat and if its presence is not consistent with the prosperity of all other species, then it must be destroyed. Such vile acts that are despicable among humans should not be condoned or witnessed in the animal kingdom. We must hunt and destroy such species as hyenas and African dogs.

A Universal Food Program for all Americans

A Universal Food Program for all Americans

With the elections close, New Yorkers should really consider one major topic that affects us all- welfare. Namely, the food assistance program. We desperately need a universal food program throughout the United States to help people purchase food. Like Food stamps, a universal food program would allot money for each household to spend on food. This is vital to the future and well-being of our country.

Right now, no candidates have spoken out on this topic. We need to do a better job. With inflation and higher food prices, all families deserve a fair price on food. For single families who don’t buy in bulk, it’s even more oppressive. We need to invoke a system that can help each person buy food that would sustain them. This is hugely important. We cannot let a food shortage bring this country down.

A universal food program would be very similar to our EBT program in that it would withhold a portion of a person’s income to pay for food or conversely, subsidize food for all. People have to spend too much on other things to be constantly worried about food and further with price gouging and inflation, they are easily susceptible to overspending. We need to change the way Americans buy and acquire food for their families. And standing on the bread line is no answer.

This is a major crisis in America and affects us all and there are no candidates on either side that have addressed the issue. In fact, they have remained silent to line the pockets of rich shareholders and supplant farmers for votes as part of a corporatizing of America. We need to change our whole view of food shopping. A universal food program would change all that and can easily be paid for with taxes or a federal subsidy that collaborate with major food producers and companies.

When a mother is unable to buy necessary food items for her family it is truly abominable. Further, it could lead to malnutrition and other health problems. When a working parent cannot afford food for their children and either alimony or child support cannot adequately pay for the food of our children, then we are falling short. A universal food program would be a uniform program that would pay for food for all Americans and thereby be more fiscally responsible and socially progressive.

I ask all Americans to vie for a universal food program that will help all families. Please don’t let our citizens starve and be deprived of such an indispensable privilege- food. Everyone deserves proper access to food and no one should be deprived.  When families are going hungry, and people cannot pay for food or their children don’t have good nutrition, there is a big hole in our thinking and logic. We need to provide for the children and families of this country and not neglect such a dire issue. When will the politicians listen?

Don’t leave Americans hungry.

Reflections on Kenosha Shooting

Reflections

By AJ Naseem

With the recent violence sweeping across the country, it only shows the greater importance of the Mandela in our lives. When we look out at the recent violence in Kenosha and elsewhere and some of the senseless crimes and violence taking place in the name of justice, the Mandela seems to have an even greater relevance in our lives. Only if its message could reach more people could many more be saved. The Mandela gives us the perfect path to resistance and self-preservation.

When we see people reacting in violent ways, it is only the Mandela that can give us solace and reprieve. The message is clear: expect the best; think before reacting; respect for self; caring for others; look for a non-violent path and transforming power. These simple everyday affirmations can truly change the direction of our lives and give better hope. We really need to uphold such a sacred rite.

The recent violence has been atrocious and it is even more important to reflect on the Mandela and look toward it for guidance. We need to gather around the table of peace with the Mandela at the center to make any progress. If only more could be done to share the message of the non-violent path with the young people across the country and others who are caught up in the violence to take a step back and realize that there is a better way. Alas, so much suffering and hardship could be thwarted by such a simple premise.

We really need to stress the importance of the Mandela now more than ever and try to bring its message to the masses. If we are focused on a non-violent path every day of our lives, a lot of these crises could be averted. I strongly believe that by practicing non-violence we can get closer to peace and harmony than relying on physical force. We need to lay down arms in the words of a famous author and say farewell to realize a true and practical state. It was hope of all our greatest leaders and I think it comes to light whenever darkness takes over that the Mandela shines brighter than ever to show us greater meaning and hope.

I hope no one of our AVP community loses hope during this time but takes solace and repose in the power of the Mandela to teach and to guide. It is also needed in the wake of such travesties to give peace to the victims and reconciliation to those affected. We need to reaffirm such a belief every day to make it real and not just lip service. I am thankful for the opportunity that AVP gave me that now lets me know that there is always hope when things seem too narrow or hopeless. I hope some of the victims of the recent violence can come into such a fold.

Argentinian Nights- A New Novel

I am officially announcing the publication and debut of my new book Argentinian Nights that is now available in paperback.  The book was a lifelong dream and is a romance novel that takes place in Buenos Aires, a land that was beyond my reach but never too far from my imagination.  A writer travels to Buenos Aires to write a book and no sooner does he meet a woman, that he begins reliving the romance of his own conjuring and a timeless love story takes shape that overlaps with his own literary symbol as we pass through parallel worlds to experience a truly perennial love story that will live on in the minds of readers who crave the eternal and absolute and witness the passing of the day to experience the everlasting romance of Argentinian Nights.
